Extreme Weather

We're experiencing the worst tornado season in over 50 years.  Why??  I have a hunch it's because of global warming, aka climate change.  I know there are people out there that say God is trying to send a message.  What message would that be?  I really don't know the cause, but I prefer to trust in science.  If God was so wonderful, why do such things occur in the first place.  We're suppose to except that God has a plan, but would it be to much let everyone in on it.  Obviously, I am a non-believer.  I can't believe that a God that suppose to be all loving and powerful would allow such disasters to occur.

When I am King, I am going to add a weather course to every high school curriculum.  I want people to know why things happen, instead of trembling in fear of God every time a dark cloud appears.  I'll also make sure that the state, local, and federal government are ready to do everything humanly possible to help people recover from such disasters.

  1. The real reason is because god hates trailer parks, that's why tornadoes exist.

Seriously though, be careful trying to assign every blip in the weather to global warming. Warming is just one component, and the previous large tornado season was over 50 years ago (as you pointed out). If tornado activity were causally linked to warming, then we should see a steady increase in activity over the past decade (like we did with warming). Instead, we see these sporadic jumps and lulls in tornado strengths, just like we see with hurricanes.

Some climate forecasters are calling for increased radical weather shifts, but look for a good study linking the casual and causal relationships before you start pointing at every storm and yelling 'if only those idiots drove a Chevy Leaf instead of a Hummer, we wouldn't be having this storm!'

There are thousands of good reasons to not buy a Hummer, and to be more efficient with our energy, without making specious connections between weather and climate change.

  2. Well said Bart. I was just upset with those that think God is sending a message. I would like people to have a better understanding of science. Everything that happens isn't god's will. Some things can be explained.
